This classic fishermen's sweater is a reproduction from a 19th-century photograph. Many working ganseys from Cornwall, England featured unique armband designs on otherwise simple sweaters, with a ribbed yoke being the most common. The armband pattern on this sweater from Polperro is called "Betty Martin" - no one knows who Betty Martin was or where she came from, but the pattern shows up on the sleeves of ganseys all around the coasts of England. When you make this sweater yourself, you can follow tradition and make a different armband for each member of your family! Worked at 7 stitches per inch (28 sts = 10cm) on US size 2 (2.75mm) needles using Frangipani Traditional Guernsey Wool.
